Almost time…

May 8, 2018 by Tyler

It has been a while since my last post, hopefully that is going to get better in about 6 weeks when I finally make a run for it and have this adventure.

Not a whole lot of excitement has happened since Jeff decided to break down a few weeks back. I basically have been working, climbing, or sleeping.

Work for the last two weeks has been nothing but IU commencement and other end of year celebrations. The larges one of which is the above beast. That my friends is the forty foot tall roof that we erected in the end zone of the football field. I just hope the giant structure helps the football players finally find the end zone… at any rate the entire process of putting that thing up takes about a week and a half, between the two days of lying the floor, two days of building on the ground, day of flying it, day of hanging the lights and sound, days of touch ups, not to mention the 20 plus trucks that it all came in on (I unloaded 15 of them)… I am officially sore and sunburnt. That being said I do appreciate having a forty foot tall jungle gym at my disposal.

Speaking of climbing… I have been trying to get into shape to do a lot of climbing while on the trip this summer and the new facility that Hoosier Heights just moved into is a great way to get myself across the finish line…

Can I just leave for this trip already?

Matches… Lots and lots of matches…

March 5, 2018 by Tyler

I haven’t posted in way too long. I haven’t posted because I have so very much going on and so very little progress on anything. Except climbing, I have been making progress in the climbing gym… but that’s got nothing to do with this post. So, back on topic… To quote my Facebook status from a few days ago, “some people have too many irons in the fire. I have too many matches in different fire pits.”

Let’s start with the reason my road trip is getting pushed back. I can’t share all the details, but we will be having a pre-Broadway tech at the local road house here in Bloomington. Normally our work schedule slows down the 2nd week of May and that was going to be the perfect time to leave and do the trip. Well we now have this tech process starting the 2nd week of May and there will be 60-80 hours of work a week for a little over a month. I can’t pass up a month of steady work like that to live in my jeep. Well I could, but that would not be the “adult” thing to do. So, the trip isn’t starting on May 12th.

I haven’t picked a date yet, but I’ve decided on a plan. The plan is no plan. I have been developing a list of activities that range from “acquire a whovian style companion” to “sleep above the tree line”. Each item on the list is getting assigned a point value according to difficulty level, how likely I am to get in trouble, and of course how good of a story it’ll make. Once I achieve 100 points, the trip will be over… or atleast I’ll start to consider going home and adulting. I’ll post the list soon, I’m still tweaking it.

So, I have known the new plan for like 2 weeks and I was almost ready to tell everyone about the new plan when I got an email inquiring about my availability for a dream gig… So I spent a week hoping to get the nod and hop on a plane. yes it would have meant blowing off every single plan that I currently have, but oh dear lord it would have been worth it… But, no nod was given and thus I did not get that gig. I did however give the guy who did get it a run for his money. That being said, just being in the running for that particular position is a good sign.

I also have been spending a lot of time trying to make myself look better on paper lately. So far I have completed several OSHA trainings, including OSHA 30. I’ve got a few other certifications on my “to-do” list, but the next one up is the ETCP rigging certifications. I’ve applied and been approved to take both the Arena and Theatrical certification exams. That pile of books you just saw is my study materials… so far all I’ve done is establish what I need to work on, and move the pile of books around my home… Every time I start to dig into the materials I get several solid days of work and loose traction. Well I have scheduled my exam day for a little over 2 weeks from now, so the studying can’t be put off any longer.

But… I have gotten in the last of the camping gear that I’ve ordered for this summer… and I don’t know how it happened, but all of it is magically packed with a weeks worth of food…

So, that’s the update… No idea where I’m going or what my plans are, but I do know that I am going to study, I am going to go to the climbing gym a lot, and I just might say screw it and go backpacking…
